Cerne Abbas Brewery

Head Brewer, Vic Irvine, and The Gaffer, Jodie Moore, joined forces at the beginning summer of 2014 as the pair share the belief that beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

The Brewery is set in the chalky hills of the Cerne Valley, the original home of British Brewing and follows a tradition of brewing originally begun by Æthelmær the Stout and his Benedictine monks when they founded a monastery in Cerne Abbas in 987. The monastery endured both plundering raids by King Canute (11th century), and the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry the Eighth in 1539.

Our beer is brewed using green sand-filtered water is of the finest quality, Maris Otter barley organically grown in the Cerne Valley by Will Best at Manor Farm, and other top-quality ingredients. No chemicals are used.

We think our beer’s great and we are not the only ones. We won our first CAMRA beer festival (2014) with our Cerne Abbas Ale, and achieved both first and second place at the 2016 CAMRA festival (with the Gurt Rum Cask Coconut, and Gurt Stout respectively). We took a bronze at the SIBA South West Beer Awards in 2016 with our Styrian Wolf. Most recently, our Gurt Coconuts Rum Stout won the CAMRA Beerex festival in 2017.

The Cerne Abbas Ale famously debuted at the Strangers Bar in the Houses of Parliament, with the distinctive Cerne Abbas Giant clothed with a fig-leaf to protect his modesty and reported by the BBC.

The Brewery recently released a Watercress Warrior beer which has appeared on BBC TV’s Saturday Kitchen and on the Simon Mayo radio show (BBC Radio 2). Watercress warrior is brewed with watercress seeds supplied by The Watercress Co. This caught the interest of the national media again due to the virility enhancing qualities of watercress the superfood innum.

We love our beer, we love our village and we love our Giant.

We, The Cerne Abbas Brewery, hereby pledge to produce the finest ales possible. We will carry out this mission with pride and passion. Not a sausage of quality will be compromised in the brewing of our beers. Beer shall come first, and the rest shall follow. We are a modest brewery with Giant integrity, rooted in experience and understanding of the noble art of brewing.
